11 Days Rwenzori Mountain Climbing

Embarking on an extraordinary adventure in Uganda promises a blend of breathtaking landscapes and unparalleled wildlife encounters. This journey will take you through the stunning Rwenzori Mountains.

Day 1- Arrival

Margherita-Camp Rwenzori Mountain Uganda

On arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed by our guide and transferred to your accommodation in either Kampala or Entebbe.

Day 2- Drive to Kasese

Rwenzori Mountain Climbing Uganda

After breakfast, you will drive through Kampala to Kasese in Western Uganda through Fort portal. You will arrive in the afternoon and relax at your accommodation before heading out to the Mountaineering services offices to ensure that you have the right gear, and all is arranged for the climb.

Day 3- Nyakalengija (1615M) – Nyabitaba (2651M)

Kachope-Valley Mountain Rwenzori Uganda

Wake up early and you proceed to Nyakalengija, where the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services offices are located for weighing your gear and porter allocation. After, you will move to Ibanda and start a 6-7 hr climb to the first hut. You will have a chance to hear some chimpanzee and blue monkeys in the nearby vegetation. You will have some parked lunch before climbing through the thick equatorial vegetation to the Nyabitaba Hut (2651metres) for dinner and overnight.

Day 4- To John Matte Hut (3505M)

Start early after breakfast from Nyabitaba Hut and climb through the Kurt Shafer Bridge that crosses the Mobuku River. This 7-hour hike takes you through the moorland Zone and it’s the longest and most strenuous walk because its steeper and rocky in some areas. You will have lunch at Nyamileju Hut, before proceeding to John Matte Hut (3505M) for dinner and overnight.

Day 1- Arrival

Day 3- Nyakalengija (1615M) – Nyabitaba (2651M)

Wake up early and you proceed to Nyakalengija, where the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services offices are located for weighing your gear and porter allocation. Day 5- To Bujuku Hut (3962M)

Here you will climb up to the Bigo bog landscape of Lobelias and giant heather. This climb takes about 5-6hrs depending on the conditions. You will also pass Lake Bujuku and you will have magnificent views of Mt Baker to the South and Mt Stanley to the West, before proceeding for dinner and overnight at Bujuku Hut (3977m) Hut.

Day 6- To Elena Hut (4541M)

Rwenzori Mountain Climbing Uganda

After breakfast, you proceed on a muddy hike through the steep cliffs. This is a section of Giant Groundsels. You will then ascend further to Elena Hut which acts as a base for the final assent of the highest peak of the Rwenzori Mountains. Meals and overnight at Elena Hut (4541m).

Day 7- To Margherita Peak- Kitandara Hut (4023M)

For those aiming at reaching Margherita Peak (5109M), you will continue to the base on the Stanley Glacier, here you will walk through the snow to Margherita peak (5109m). The climb takes about 5-7 hrs depending on the weather conditions and the pace of climbing. This gives a good and beautiful scenic view and if the weather conditions are favourable, sunset would find you at the peak hence a good photo opportunity. After, descend to the Kitandara Lakes for dinner and overnight at the Kitandara Hut.

  • The descend takes an average of 3 – 4 hours

Day 8- To Guy Yeoman Hut (3505M)

At this point, you get to have beautiful views of the alpine moss. You will also have views of Congo to the West and Mount Stanley to the North. The trail then leads through the Bujongolo rock shelters. You will have a picnic lunch on your way. Dinner and overnight will be at Guy Yeoman Hut.

Day 5- To Bujuku Hut (3962M)

Day 9- Back to Nyabitaba Hut (2651M)

You will proceed to Nyabitaba past Mobuku River and the Bamboo Forest. It takes about 7-8 hrs.  Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba hut.

  • The descent takes 7 – 8 hours

Day 10- To Nyakalengija (1615M)

On this day you will descend to Nyakalengija trailhead (1615M) which takes about 3-4 hrs. You will be met by our safari guide, who will take you to a local restaurant for a drink a celebration after completing your hike. Later, you will proceed to your hotel in Kasese for an overnight.

Day 11- Drive back to Kampala (7-8hrs)

Wake up early for a return journey to Kampala for your international flight, or we can arrange an extra night for you in either Kampala or Entebbe at an extra fee.
